The start of Gallery K

It all begins with an idea. Isn’t that the truth? I could begin with the long story of how I ended up where I am today, but I know you’re not here for all the juicy details ;) You’re here for the story of how I went from a BFA student, (graduating in the middle of a global pandemic) to a successful potter/functional maker.

Let me tell you one thing, it was a long and strenuous journey and definitely isn’t for the faint of heart. Working for yourself is HARD, with LONG hours but it’s absolutely a dream come true in so many ways.

To start my journey off, I was studying business at University of Waterloo, when I accidentally got put in a ceramics class. When it happened I was devastated, but in retrospect, it was the best thing thats ever happened to me. Soon after that ceramics class I transferred to Sheridan College to study in the Craft and Design program. I would highly recommend this program to anyone thinking about it. Sheridan is an incredible school and I am so grateful for the time I spent studying there. After three and a half years of technical learning and experimentation in those big atmospheric kilns, I made an impulsive decision to move across the country and finish my BFA at NSCAD.

The change of scenery and the focus on ART was a huge change for me and ultimately changed my studio practice for the better. I learned a lot about who I want to be as an artist and how I was going to get there. In August of 2020 I graduated with a BFA majoring in ceramics and had always planned on doing artist residencies right after school. With the global pandemic closing all communal studios and residencies I had no idea what I was going to do next.

In January of 2021 I decided to take my career into my own hands and move back across the country to my home town of Peterborough Ontario. Soon after this I began developing my next body of work, my brand and how I was going to bring it all to life. It’s now September of 2021 and I am actively selling my work in two stores and online. I still have a long way to go to reach my goals but I’m very proud of how far I’ve come.

Thanks for listening <3 and stay tuned for my next post coming soon.

xoxo
